Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Babeck, partner of Buse Heberer Fromm and manager of the firm’s Sydney office elected chairman of the International Law Section (ILS) of the Law Council of Australia on 8 December 2015. ILS is one of the Law Councils five sections. The Law Council of Australia is the peak national representative body of the Australian legal profession and represents the interests of over 60.000 legal practitioners nationwide.
According to Babeck, “the internationalization of the law is of particular interest for Australia”. He adds: “Australia has entered into various bilateral trade agreements and negotiations with the EU are to commence in 2017. In the same year Sydney will also be hosting the annual conference of the International Bar Association (IBA) and my fellow ILS board members were instrumental in bringing the conference to Sydney as venue.” “Even though I have worked as a solicitor in Australia for a long period of time, I am of course happy of being able to add my experience as a continental European lawyer to the ILS. Especially with regard to procedural law, where differences could hardly be any greater.” As adjunct professor of Bond University, Babeck has held lectures on the key differences between the common and the civil law system for many years.
